If a corset feels like its cutting you in half- it is too small for you. It should at most be 4 inches narrower than your waist. Anything smaller is unhealthy
You are appsolutely correct. Back in the heyday of wearing a corset, both men and woman wore them. They could and did kill people who over did them. BTW Whaler cove in Sausalito California would put out the ribs of whales to dry for the making of corset.
