This story has no connection to Cinder Isle at all, because Crossfire does not take place in the SF universe, unlike Cinder Isle.
A device inside the alien slime? Maybe it’s the alien’s “brain” or something. This probably means that someone/something created, or at least modified, this creature for this very purpose, and that the alien’s not a naturally occurring species in Odyssey.
Well, I say “brain”, but the alien seems to only have a vocabulary of a 2-year-old…

Maybe that brain is the alien’s weakness, destroying it could be a possible solution.
Considering that this creature couldn’t initially comprehend the word “understand” I’m guessing that it is learning certain words from Rookie’s mind, although very slowly. That the longer this transformation goes on, the smarter this alien becomes. It would also explain why the alien is rubbing Rookie’s body and breasts, because it learned about the most sensual spots on the human body from Rookie’s own sexual experiences.
Maybe some perv-mad-scientist created those blobs?
I thought that Gaia use to be a teria former who got caught in the creation of life on this world.
From what they’ve said, it does not sound like the Federation created new life on Odyssey. They’re just in the middle of terraforming the planet so that human life can live here. The planet wasn’t recently created, which means the creatures on this planet have existed for thousands, if not millions of years before the Federation showed up. And if these aliens have been on Odyssey for thousands of years, why are they only attacking humans now? All in due time. Let’s just savor this transformation while it’s happening, especially since it’s also trying to build up the mystery surrounding this alien, what happened to Odyssey’s population, and the fact that the Crossfire crew are now on their way to rescue Rookie (and possibly Phantom). It seems that this transformation is doing one change per page – the last time was Rookie’s breasts, today’s was his voice. We’ve still gotta do his penis and hair before we get to his face.
