Has Shane told his dad about the fake news that the government spread to the outside yet? Of course Dutch will be shocked and devastated to find that his wife thinks her family is dead.

Devastating would be a better term.

Divorce is the easy way out instead of trying to tend to the actual matter at hand. Though there have been times where either my wife or I could have taken that path (not to mention thought about it more than once), both of us have always pulled through — 21 years strong and still counting.

Once upon a time that was the norm. in this day and age with shallow comments, that an eternity. You and your wife are winners.

Divorced couples hardly ever take the children into account in terms of their feelings and psychological state of mind. In ever case that I’ve ever read about, or have learned through a close friend or family member who has gone through the process, the children are often used as a ‘weapon’ by one or both of the parents as a negotiating term to get more money. IMHO, if the other parent is more concerned about money and physical possessions, they can have it. Everything is meaningless, except life and time itself, which are — by far — the most valuable… Read more »

Now this is something I can sympathize with… My parents used to have really vicious fights from time to time and the topic of divorce was often brought up. It was very hard to deal with as a kid and teenager. I never asked them if they knew I could hear them or not. Almost everyone in my parent’s generation of the family ended up divorced. Those that didn’t, had a spouse die. My father, and two uncles passed away. Three other uncles ended up divorced and so did my father’s parents. Personally, I don’t even believe in marriage myself… Read more »

I don’t even think same -sex marriage was legal in Maine back then. That being the case, I don’t think Gavin’s Parents’ marriage would be recognized and therefore they couldn’t get divorced either. So at the time in which this story takes place, it could be that the only reason that they haven’t divorced yet is because legally they can’t.

It depends.

Would they officially recognize gender if created by a virus or would circumstances in this case permit a look past?

Because from what I heard marriage would remain intact between a post op trans and a woman

That is in the here and now, not back 1996. I don’t the courts has heard, let alone discuss something like this.

I think back then your gender was legally fixed as your birth gender. If you did go through gender reassignment, or were trans, that was tough – your passport and driving license still had your gender as your birth gender.

So far as getting a divorce that would and wouldn’t be a problem. Legally it was still a marriage between a male and female (although the man turning into a woman could be construed as ‘unreasonable behaviour’). However since everyone on the isle has been declared dead then how can dead people apply for a divorce?

I mean, who cares about legalities. To the rest of the world, they are already dead. Pretty sure the military and police are only concerned with keeping the peace.

If you thinking in that manner, pick out your grave site because in your already dead in your mind’s eye. As long as you are alive and access to tools and materials to help aid in an escape, then there is hope.

You’re the one who is already dead. You’re insane if you think you can escape the US military. They will have no problem putting you down.

Being this 1996 and same sex couples was very hush, hush and there are no known cases of spontaneous sex changes to use as a guide, the court would be in a preponderates as no known procedures in dealing with something like this. Being there are a great deal of legal and moral question to be answer, the could would be wise to invoke a blanket of motion of dissolution, absolve all known and perceived cases of infection. This would have allowed the interested party to voice their concerns, to have the legislature and the religious leader to weigh in… Read more »

I doubt that the state of Maine has any power on this particular matter, as well as any other marriages that have been torn apart due to one or both members getting infected in Cinder Isle. It’s not like the state government can say anything, Wanda and Clarissa can’t leave Cinder Isle and the rest of the world thinks they’re dead. Given the situation on Cinder Isle, something like this is going to come down to the local officials. If Wanda and Clarissa truly want to get a divorce, I’m sure that the local Cinder Isle judges can be given… Read more »

Prior to same sex marriage legalization, if one of the spouses had a sex change the marriage was still enforced. But if they then got a divorced they wouldn’t be able to re-marry.
